Industry

The history of the sugar industry in Australia dates back more than 150 years. Sugar is Australia's second largest export crop with a total annual revenue of almost $2 billion.

Export Driven

Australia exports 80% - 85% of its raw sugar to overseas markets making it the world's second largest raw sugar exporter and the largest exporter into the rapidly growing Asian market. Australian export raw sugar is premium quality, high polarisation, with a well earned reputation for in-spec, on-time delivery.

Market Price

The price ACF receives for its sugar is directly linked to the world market price and can be hedged up to 4 years forward based on the New York futures market.

Scale Opportunity

The farm sector is highly fragmented with around 900 farmers operating within the Burdekin. The typical cane farm is less than 75 hectares and together, with an ageing grower cohort, provides ACF with opportunities to build scale whilst offering a succession plan for cane farmers considering an alternative to generational transition.

Growth

Growth in a global sugar demand is being driven by rising global population and increasing per-capita consumption in the developing world.

Production and export infrastructure includes an extensive rail network to transport harvested cane, 4 sugar mills crushing 8 million tonnes of cane per year, a bulk storage and export shipping terminal in Townsville, and an industry-operated marketing and logistic arm managed by Queensland Sugar Limited.
